Tis’ the Season… of Giving

Giving of time, money and goods is a notion that is emphasized even more during the holiday season at Groupe Somavrac. To encourage this dedication to community organizations, the company organizes annual activities for its employees to get them involved in the movement.

Decorating Contest at the Head Office

For the holiday season, to brighten up the head office, a challenge was issued to each department to decorate their workspace in an original and festive way. To motivate all employees to participate, the department receiving the highest score from the jury had the opportunity to donate $1,000 to the cause of their choice. The departments had a great time on November 25th while decorating their offices. Four departments received the highest score from the judges. As a result, they each donated $250 to the following causes: Artisans de la Paix, COMSEP, the Breakfast Club and Moisson Mauricie. Congratulations to all the participants for bringing some holiday magic to the offices!

Reading for Christmas with COMSEP

For the 3rd consecutive year, Groupe Somavrac and Librairie L’Exèdre  collaborated in offering books to the children of the community organization COMSEP. This organization gives back daily to the residents of Trois-Rivières who live in poverty by helping them obtain better living conditions.

The donation of books was born from a desire to have a direct impact on the community. As a result, Groupe Somavrac asked COMSEP officials how to offer the best gift to the children served by the organization during the holiday season. The donated books are intended to help the children and their families learn and improve their French language skills.

During the first edition, in 2019, the company gave books to 62 children. In 2020, this number was increased to 82 children and this year, in 2021, 85 children received a book for Christmas.

To convey the Christmas spirit, each book was wrapped and identified by some of Groupe Somavrac employees. The books were hand-delivered before Christmas to each of the children, who were kind enough to make cards for the Groupe Somavrac.

The 2021 edition was therefore a success, much to our delight!

Food donations for Moisson Mauricie

Over the past few years, Groupe Somavrac has called upon the generosity of its employees by collecting things for various causes. Last year, the purpose was to collect used books for COMSEP as well as accessories for the animals of the Mauricie SPA. This year, the purpose of the boxes was to encourage employees to donate food for Moisson Mauricie. Over 45 kg of food was collected by the employees of the Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec regions. Thanks again to all those who participated!

Record Year of Donations to Centraide

For many years, the company has organized an internal fundraising campaign to support Centraide. The money raised is used, among other things, to support the success of young people and to ensure essentials for families in need. This year, employee participation was a huge success! In fact, they raised over $4,500 for the organization. Groupe Somavrac is very proud of the kindness and involvement of its employees and has also added an amount to bring the donation up to $7’ 000. Everyone’s generosity has once again exceeded expectations!

Discover Servichem

Excerpted from an interview with William-Olivier Masson, Director of Operations for Servichem and Chloretec since February 2020

Get to know Servichem in this article.

Servichem is one of the oldest subsidiaries of Groupe Somavrac. It joined the Groupe Somavrac team in 1985, setting up in Ville Sainte-Catherine, on the South Shore of Montreal.

Service and facility specializations

Servichem offers modern, efficient infrastructure to provide stevedoring, warehousing, handling, and transformation services for dry and liquid bulk. Servichem can also leverage its access to the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Its strategic waterfront position enables Servichem to load and unload ships. The company can then provide full-service logistics, including bagging, warehousing, and rail transshipping. The products Servichem handles most frequently are salt and calcium chloride, two products distributed by sister Groupe Somavrac subsidiaries Somavrac C.C. and UBA to a number of industries, including mining, highways, and construction.

The various products handled are warehoused in tanks, silos, or domes. These facilities are located near docks to warehouse products unloaded from trains or ships. Two domes are used to warehouse products that can be transferred by rail or truck. Servichem can also accommodate thirty to forty 90-ton railcars. Its exterior warehousing capacity exceeds 27,000 square meters.

“We help and support customers to make sure things go smoothly.”

Servichem also provides automatic, semi-automatic, and manual bagging services. The company uses an automated FFS line to bag salt (both treated and untreated), at a rate of 20 bags per minute. That’s the fastest machine in the industry. Servichem also has two manual lines for small and large formats (10 kg, 20 kg, and 35 kg) used especially for calcium chloride. Servichem’s semi-automatic line handles the large-format bagging of a variety of products.

The benefits of choosing Servichem

Servichem operations are highly versatile. The subsidiary provides a wide range of solutions and movements that can be adapted to meet customers’ every need. Servichem’s proximity to customers and high responsiveness are two of its main assets. Whether it involves taking charge of stevedoring operations, full warehousing, or shipping logistics, Servichem can provide end-to-end services for its customers’ products.

5 reasons to choose Groupe Somavrac ans its stevedoring service

Groupe Somavrac’s supply chain and logistics expertise is what sets the company apart and enables it to provide a full range of services. In this article, we focus on one specific service – stevedoring. Here are five good reasons to choose Groupe Somavrac and its stevedoring service.

A HUMAN APPROACH

The stevedoring service our team of experts provides stands out from the competition, in part thanks to the personal touch we promote throughout the supply chain and logistics process. Whether it’s in terms of transparent information sharing, proximity to customers, frequent interactions with them, or customization measures implemented on their behalf, Groupe Somavrac takes care to build solid relations with its customers. We work together with customers and carriers so that everyone involved in the stevedoring service can leverage our professionals’ proactive approach. That kind of collaboration helps maintain good relations with key parties throughout the supply chain and ensure overall satisfaction every step of the way. All of it is made possible thanks to the ready availability of our experts. Examples of this collaboration include making sanitary facilities available to carriers in one of our terminals and the measures we have set up to reduce their turnaround time and maximize the efficiency of their supply chain.

“THE SOMAVRAC TEAM IS PASSIONATE ABOUT STEVEDORING. THE COMPANY WAS FOUNDED ON THAT DRIVE AND IT SHINES THROUGH IN THE SERVICE WE PROVIDE OUR CUSTOMERS.”

HANDLING A WIDE RANGE OF PRODUCTS

Over the years, Somavrac has handled a wide variety of products that can be loaded onto and unloaded from ships. In fact, excluding a few specific products, Groupe Somavrac can handle any type of dry bulk, bagged material, semi-bulk, or liquid bulk through its stevedoring service. From fertilizers to mine products, de-icing salts, and general cargo, our team of experts can meet your every stevedoring need. Our versatility and flexibility make it possible for our company to serve a number of industries, including agribusiness, mining, chemicals, cement plants, pulp and paper mills, and many more.

STRATEGIC TERMINALS

One of the elements that separates Groupe Somavrac’s stevedoring service from the rest is the strategic location of its terminals. Most of its terminals are positioned along the Saint Lawrence River, in several different locations to best meet our customers’ needs. Some of our terminals feature nearby warehousing areas and are located near railways or major roadway access points for optimal transportation of cargo. Several of our terminals are also equipped with tank farms for liquid bulk, to make it possible to warehouse a wider range of products.

 SHIP LIGHTENING SERVICE

Groupe Somavrac’s stevedoring services also include ship lightening. Lightening consists of partially unloading a ship of its cargo to lower its weight below the draft limits of its final destination, such as when heading toward the Great Lakes. Lightening helps customers optimize load volumes from overseas by unloading imported cargo in several locations. It also enables customers to develop a new market in Quebec. The areas Groupe Somavrac serves can be great places to optimize the supply chain and logistics of customers with needs in Quebec and the Great Lakes area.

TURNKEY SERVICE

Naturally, Groupe Somavrac specializes in a wide variety of logistics services to provide you with turnkey solutions. As such, our team of experts can simply oversee stevedoring, but it can also warehouse, handle, transform, or transport your cargo. Such services can include the bagging, solution preparation, or transshipping of various products.

5 Reasons to Choose Groupe Somavrac and Its Complete Logistics Service

Excerpted from an interview with Mikael Gagnon, Business Development Manager at Groupe Somavrac since 2017.

We are experts in dealing with chemicals and hazardous materials

We offer full-service product-handling logistics, even for hazardous materials, for industries such as mining or pulp and paper. The Groupe Somavrac team has the equipment and expertise to handle and transform cargo, no matter the specifics (gas, flammable, corrosive, etc.), with the particular skills and knowledge applicable regulations and work methods require.

The company has owned and operated chemical manufacturing plants since 1999. As a result, we’ve developed unique expertise over the years when it comes to handling these types of cargo. We are now in a position to handle over thirty different kinds of hazardous material.

We let customers focus on their core business

Given the labour shortage, companies are having a hard time finding specialized workers in their respective industries. Hiring additional employees to oversee raw material procurement and shipping means making significant efforts in terms of staffing, training, health and safety, and inventory management. Having to add internal logistics specialists to personnel significantly reduces the time the company can spend on the key activity that drives their success.

Customers are increasingly seeking to stay focused on their core service offering and delegate related tasks to experts in those fields. Logistics is a great example: Groupe Somavrac can take over operations including cargo stevedoring, warehousing, transportation, and handling and transformation so customers can focus on their core business.

“Groupe Somavrac has always been responsive to customer needs and proactive in developing solutions that require research, development, and significant investments.”

We offer full customization

We can adapt our service to various types of bulk (solid or liquid), material (acids, bases, etc.), and transformation (preparing solutions, sifting, etc.). Over time, the company has built a diverse customer base thanks to its custom logistics offering. Whether dealing with cement, ore concentrates, or fertilizers, Groupe Somavrac has always been responsive to customer needs and proactive in developing solutions that require research, development, and significant investments.

We help import large volumes, export small volumes, and vice versa

Our pivotal position on the shores of the Saint Lawrence is a strategic gateway to America, the Great Lakes, and the American Northeast.

This strategic position on the Saint Lawrence Seaway enables us to receive large volumes of imported cargo and raw materials. Our teams then get to work to transfer and forward them efficiently across North America. We also make it easier to transport cargo for export markets, with a seamless transition between road, rail, and maritime transportation.

We help optimize overall costs

As the company can provide a wide range of services, it’s a one-stop shop for complete logistics. No need to deal with four or five different service providers to unload and warehouse your cargo. We have the facilities and handling equipment to do the work simply and cost effectively.

Your logistics operations can all be handled by multimodal handling specialists in a single, safe location that is specially designed for multimodal operations! Not to mention the simpler administrative aspect of dealing with one invoice, one contract, one set of inventory tracking, and one contact person.

Christmas Mission!

Don de livres COMSEP

To celebrate the holiday season properly, Groupe Somavrac has organized several activities to give back to its community!

Christmas reading with COMSEP

This year again, we donated books to children of the COMSEP organization. This Popular Education Organization brings together people living in poverty who try to improve their living conditions. The idea of donating books to this organization came from our desire to be more involved in our community, while giving useful gifts to children.

Last year, the company donated 62 books to the children of the organization in partnership with a local bookstore (Libraire L’Exèdre). This year, a total of 82 books were given in partnership with the same local bookstore. In addition to that, most of the books donated are either by Quebec or Canadian authors, illustrators, or publishing houses to encourage the local culture and economy.

Also, employees had the chance to donate to the organization by giving their used books to replenish the COMSEP library. Over 5 large boxes full of used books were donated this way to the organization. The generosity of our employees has once again exceeded expectations!

Donation of Blankets and Accessories to SPA Mauricie

This year, in addition to book collection bins at the head office, bins for the SPA Mauricie, a local pet shelter, three collection boxes were set up so that employees could donate comforters, cushions and other accessories for cats and dogs. The three bins were filled and there is no doubt that the pets at the SPA Mauricie will benefit from the generosity of the Groupe Somavrac employees.

Drawing Competition

Every year, the company sends holiday greeting cards to its customers. To change things a bit, this year we organized a drawing competition with our employees’ children. The winning drawing would then be used as a virtual card! In addition, our winner had the opportunity to choose a foundation of his or her choice to which the company would donate $ 1,000. This is how Evan Lyrette, our HR colleague Carine Harton’s son won and gave to the Mira Foundation. Thanks to his beautiful drawing entitled “Christmas at Somavrac” we sent unique cards to our customers while giving back to a good cause.

2020 edition of our Denim Days for the Cause campaign

Groupe Somavrac is proud to have participated in fundraising with Dumoulin Competition’s Race Against Cancer for the Quebec Cancer Foundation. Thanks to the various activities organized by the Groupe Somavrac employees, we are proud to announce that 10 200$ will be donated to the cause this year.

Even though the world took in recent months, cancer did. It is in this spirit that Groupe Somavrac employees organized the following fundraising activities to give for the cause.

First, the traditional Denim Days for the Cause were back from June to the end of September. The concept is very simple: every Friday, employees can wear denim to the office in exchange for a small amount that goes directly to the cause. Plus, did you know that it is this concept started this whole movement?

Second, tickets to win local gift baskets of regional businesses were sold to employees. The money raised was entirely donated to the cause, plus this allowed us to encourage local companies. The baskets came from the companies: Marée Chandelles, Le Temps d´une Pinte, Domaine et Vins Gélinas, Le Panetier and Passion Lavande and were greatly appreciated by the winners.

Third, to comply with government guidelines put in place in July, denim masks were sold to the employees. The beautiful masks produced by ML Creation, a local company, were a real success and really paid off.

« The large number of activities organized, and employees who participate, show how well the values of the Paquin family have been conveyed to the employees of Groupe Somavrac »

Simon Cossette, Groupe Somavrac’s employee

Thank you to all the participants who make a true difference in the fight against cancer!

Environment Week at Groupe Somavrac

Semaine de l'environnement

This year again, Groupe Somavrac organized an environment week. During this week, several activities aimed at raising employee awareness concerning environmental respect for the planet took place. Videos and blog posts were shared with employees. In addition, several competitions aimed at zero waste, the reduction of greenhouse gases as well as the implementation of new ecological measures also took place.

Sharing information via email

Due to the pandemic, Groupe Somavrac provided environmental information through videos and blog articles to its employees. A video concerning compost and a video giving tips and tricks to reduce waste were sent to employees. In addition, two other DIY-style videos (do-it-yourself) to create non-toxic household cleaning products and soaps were shared.

Finally, 4 blog articles about greenwashing, applications to reduce food waste, waste reduction as well as upcycling from the kitchen into practical items were sent to all of Groupe Somavrac employees.

Friendly competitions

We challenged our employees to go zero-waste for their lunches aiming to decrease and spread awareness towards single-use plastic at lunch. To increase participation participants had a chance to win a “zero waste” kit.

We also organized “the responsible car use challenge”. The goal of this challenge was to promote carpooling, cycling, walking and the use of public transport to reduce greenhouse. Over 175 kilometers were saved July 20th through 24th thanks to this competition.

A last competition was launched to all subsidiaries, the goal of this one was to collect environmental improvement suggestions to be implemented within the company. Here are some suggestions that we received: informative posters about recycling, a second deposit box for returnable containers, installation of motion detector lights in the bathrooms and a deposit box for pens, markers, permanent and others. These suggestions will be put in place in the company in September.

First vessel of the year in Trois-Rivieres

Ellensborg_1er-navire-2019-Port-Trois-Rivières

The Ellensborg is the first ocean vessel from a foreign port to land at the Port of Trois-Rivières in 2019. It reached the port on January 7th at 2:24 pm after a 25-day crossing over the Atlantic.

The vessel, with about 15 crew members of Thai nationality, left the port of Lüderitz in Namibia on December 14, 2018 which is unloaded by Somavrac for CEZinc company.

Mrs. Danielle St-Amand, President of the Board of Directors of the Trois-Rivières Port Authority states: “To win the title of the 1st vessel, it [the vessel] must come from a foreign port, and must have made his crossing without making a stopover before arriving at Trois-Rivières to carry out a loading or unloading operation at the port “.

At the 53rd ceremony marking the arrival of the first vessel of the year at the Port of Trois-Rivières, the captain, Mr. Meemongkhon Choorith and the chief engineer Mr. Singh-Sa Suthep, received the painting « A port, a team » , by Madame Caroline St-Pierre, a painter from the Mauricie region as well as a basket of regional products.

Mr. Gaétan Boivin, President and CEO of the TRPA, recalled that Somavrac handles mining products for various mining and refining plants located in Quebec, Ontario and the United States, from its facilities at Port of Trois-Rivières.

7 actions Groupe Somavrac has taken to reduce its ecological footprint

Empreinte écologique, Groupe Somavrac, ecological footprint

Since environmental innovation is one of the company’s priorities, Groupe Somavrac is constantly looking for ways to improve its ecological footprint. Here are some of the concrete actions it has taken to this end.

1. Environment week:

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd, the company hosts an annual Environment Week. This year, four activities were organized over the course of the week to teach employees how to reduce their ecological footprint, including a composting workshop, a veganism workshop, tips and tricks to reduce their ecological footprint, etc.

2. Rigorous compliance audits:

Groupe Somavrac’s Health, Safety and Environment department rigorously audits processes in place to ensure that all environmental standards are met and surpassed.

3. Crisis simulations:

Several crisis simulations are conducted each year to prepare employees to act quickly in the event of an environmental crisis, thereby limiting associated damages.

4. Recycling programs for paper, cardboard, batteries, cell phones, fluorescent tubes and obsolete electronic equipment:

In addition to recycling paper and cardboard, boxes are available for Groupe Somavrac employees to discard used batteries. Fluorescent tubes are routed to one of the 6 drop-off points of the RecycFluo program in the Mauricie region, and computer equipment is sent to specialized recycling companies.

5. Crisis management plan:

Groupe Somavrac’s crisis management plan calls for communication with the Ministry of Environment as soon as an incident occurs to limit any impact on the environment.

6. Members of the Green Marine program:

Subsidiaries Servitank (Plant 16) and Porlier are members of Green Marine, an environmental program for ports and terminals. The following performance indicators track the issues the program addresses: greenhouse gases and air pollutants, leak and spill prevention, solid bulk handling and storage, harmonization of uses, environmental leadership and environmental management of residual materials.

7. Participation in the “Défi Sans Auto Solo”:

Every year, Groupe Somavrac takes part in “Défi sans auto solo”, which challenges citizens to reduce car use. Through this initiative, the company has managed to save more than 100 kilograms of CO2 this year!

Culture week

Semaine de la culture

Groupe Somavrac likes to offer its support to the cultural sector. Why culture? Because it brings people together and enriches the spirit.

Indeed, the family spirit that reigns within the company goes hand in hand with the unifying aspect that emerges from culture. In addition, the company is in a field that requires creativity and development of divergent thinking, especially to optimize or carry out logistic projects for customers. In additation, the corporate services must use their creativity to help develop the company.

From September 24 to 28, the communications and marketing department organized a Culture Week. Visual, culinary and literary arts: were put forward during this week. Each day had a different theme to allow employees to demonstrate or discover an artistic talent. Here is a brief overview of the activities organized during this week

  • A painting canvas has been installed to allow employees to give free rein to their creativity
  • A private show was organized with the best singers and guitarists of the company
  • A literary activity was held during dinner time with an artist from the region
  • A poetic journey was affixed on the walls of the offices

Several studies suggest that culture has health and moral benefits. Cultural participants are “less stressed and less engaged in a routine, and very satisfied with their lives […].”[1] A week is not enough to bring out such benefits, but it brought other benefits such as knowing our colleagues from a different angle: the pastry programmer, the administrative assistant who is an artist or the fine pen of our college in the health, safety and environment department.

Business Case: stevedoring and transport of oversized parts

arrimage et transport de modules surdimensionnées

On Québec’s North Shore, Porlier Express is a leading industrial partner, thanks to its broad service offer that includes multimodal handling services, terminal management as part of industrial outsourcing, and various logistics projects.

Last year, Porlier Express had the opportunity to bring its multimodal handling expertise to life by providing oversized docking and transport of oversized modules. This operation included part transfers from a vessel to a trailer.

Main challenges for the client

  • Deadline to meet (8 hours)
  • A total of nine parts were to be handled, two which were oversized :
    – Weight: 70 metric tons
    – Dimensions: 16 ‘and 8 “wide / 54’ ‘and 11’ ‘long / 15’ ‘and 3’ high;
  • Health and safety constraints due to the size and weight of the parts
  • Degraded / damaged road

Solutions offered by Porlier Express *

  • Ship cranes were used to unload parts on a multi-line trailer
  • A platform for securing parts on trucks in a safety zone was used
  • Grading and road improvement for approximately one kilometer to ensure safe transportation

Results and impacts for the client

  • The project was completed in 6 hours
  • The plant was able to continue operations quickly
  • The operation was carried out without incident and impact on the environment

Porlier Express demonstrates, once again, in choosing Porlier Express, customers reduce inherent operational risks, maximize productivity, and can focus on their operations and core industrial activities.

Business case: tank and injection system design for the agricultural industry

Engrais, Servitank

Adding additives to fertilizer recipes helps adjust the product to various farmlands, based on the nutritional deficiencies found in the soil.

This step (addition of additives) adds to the agricultural supply chain, which in turn reduces the number of possible deliveries. Most of the time, adding additives is done manually for each fertilizer, which also significantly increases delivery time. These two issues raise the following question: how can we offer a personalized fertilizer to each customer without increasing delivery time and reducing the number of deliveries?

Servitank solutions*

Servitank supports blends that inject additives directly into an automated pipeline controlled by programmable logic controllers. The automation of this process makes the manufacturing of tailored fertilizers simple, flexible, and fast.

Reservoirs, pumps, and pipes have been installed and adapted to the process of adding additives directly to the Servitank terminal for agribusiness customers.

6 Things to Consider When Selecting a Mining Concentrate Handler

Arrimage, stevedoring, Groupe Somavrac

Tons of rocks and minerals are transported and unloaded at different various ports each year. This essential step in the logistics chain must be supported by a logistics service provider that cares about the environment and provides safe and efficient operational management of cargo.

Since mining concentrate shipping operations require a variety of operational skills, you should seek to do business with a long-term partner that you can rely on rather than a basic supplier. Here are a few tips to help you find a real “gem” ;).

1. Appropriate facilities

Make sure the supplier [future partner] who you want to handle your mining concentrate is strategically positioned. To do so, ask yourself: which corridors best match the desired transport logistics? Depending on the quantities and characteristics of the cargo, railways, roads or waterways will help best meet your needs. Briefly, here are some facility features you should consider with your supplier: technical installation specifications [water depths, tide, access and port infrastructures], maritime and road traffic, demurrage/wharfage fees, and other related user fees. The supplier can show you a schematic representation (e.g. flowchart) of the various intermodal or combined transport solutions available to you and the associated costs.

2. Equipment and working methods

Cargo characteristics [dry bulk, moisture content, stickiness or powder] must be taken into account during handling. The supplier must therefore be familiar with the compatibility between types of cargo [if applicable] and have diverse handling equipment adapted to the characteristics of products. Facilities should include a variety of items such as railcar and truck loading and unloading stations or ship loading and unloading facilities that integrate effectively for smart cargo handling sequencing. An experienced supplier knows how to limit losses, improve safety and expedite delivery through its equipment and working methods, even in adverse weather conditions. The knowledge of your supplier at this level will be reflected in their portfolio of achievements. Do not hesitate to ask for this kind of information.

3. Health and safety

Mine efforts in health, safety and environment must be consistent with those of their logistics provider. Here are some statistics to go over with them:
– Existence of a health, safety and environment department within the company
– Health and safety program with regular internal audits
– Employee training: of what kind? Is it up to date;?
– Incident rate over the last few years
– Severity and frequency rates
– Crisis management plan in place

4. Competitive pricing

In terms of handling, efficiency equals savings. This is not set in stone ;), but the years of experience of a logistics handler can give you an idea of its efficiency and ability to minimize product loss. Feel free to validate how long the supplier has handled your type of cargo and how often they do so in a year. In addition, for this type of product, ask about the loading and unloading rates in tons per hour and operational parameters (ship unloading times, etc.). Simply make sure that the price quoted by your provider meets your expectations.

5. Environmental care and dust control

The health and safety of the public and employees, as well as the protection of the environment, must always be considered first when handling your cargo. To ensure that your supplier shares your concerns about these aspects, check that :
– The supplier has never caused major damage to the environment nor has bad press about it.
– Cleanliness is a business practice.
– Storage sites are near loading and unloading areas.
– The supplier has equipment and site maintenance procedures (mechanical broom sweepers).
– Conveyors for the transfer of goods are covered and well-laid out or transfers are made inside the warehouses.

6. Ability to meet specific needs

Remember that each supplier has its specialty and ability to meet your specific needs, particularly concerning bulk product handling. Therefore, validate the openness the supplier demonstrates regarding your quality control or inventory requests, for example. Also consider the offer of related products such as dust suppressants, pH control, nitrates, liquefied natural gas, etc.

That is a quick overview of things to look for when seeking out a good business partner. Supplier facilities and skills are important, but their attitude, which includes listening, responsiveness and dedication, is just as important!
